My Best Books of 2009

For the first time ever, I was able to read at least 50 books in a year. It was a huge accomplishment for me! A few things I learned about myself in 2009:

  • I read a lot of books I consider "grocery store reads" and really enjoyed some of them.
  • I liked some of the books people recommended to me that I would not have otherwise read (namely The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan and Bitten by Kelley Armstrong).
  • I realized that I was a book snob before and opening myself up to new things helped me have great conversations in groups on Shelfari and also helped me find forums that I felt comfortable posting in. I did not have any fun in a forum that discussed a different classic book every month--they were too book snobby for me!
  • Joining Shelfari was great! I met a lot of people in the Anne McCaffrey and All of Her Worlds group that I share a lot in common with bookwise!
My Favorite Books of 2009
  1. Atonement - Ian McEwan
  2. Hyperion - Dan Simmons
  3. The Fall of Hyperion - Dan Simmons
  4. The Kite Runner Khaled Hosseini
  5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
  6. A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. LeGuin
  7. Heaven's Net is Wide - Lian Hearn
  8. The Zookeeper's Wife - Diane Ackerman
  9. The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton
  10. Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion and the Road to Recovery - Janet F. Kitz
  11. In the Woods - Tana French
I am definitely looking forward to reading in 2010. I plan on continuing to read more things that people recommend, and I'm really excited about the reading challenges I've added. I am definitely a goal oriented person so I hope having the little meter under the challenges will really motivate me.

What are your goals (reading or otherwise) for 2010? What were your favorite books of 2009?

Oh my. I may have to re-visit my list to consider which books were MY favorites this year. And, the Anne McCaffery group is definately my best group on Shelfari, too. From your list, the only one I read this year was Kiterunner. The only other one I've read was EarthSea.

ahh yea Anne McCaffrey Group! Without you ladies and a few gents we have in there... it would not be as good as it is! I appreciate your input and love the discussions we all have going on =D.

My goals for 2010 is to complete a 50 book challenge... I'm excited and i have no idea how many books I read last year. My favorite books were the Sanderson and GRRM's... hopefully you'll be able to pick up the first soon!

I love your list. i have yet to read any of those books... however I have Atonement sitting on my shelf. Perhaps I should pick it up finally. I'll let you know what I think... I enjoyed the movie!

I can't wait to read the Brandon Sanderson books. I'm thinking that I'll get to them after I finish the Dark Tower series (I have 5 of them to read). Since I'm reading Anne McCaffrey and now Terry Goodkind every month for book clubs, I'll have to put off Sanderson for a bit. I am so bummed though because I read another review that said he was great! Cam, you'd love the Earthsea books. They are short and great fantasy. I plan to finish the series this coming year.

Oh, I have a question for you ladies. So for the 50 book challenge, do you think I can start a book in December but finish it in January does that count? I wanted to start The Waste Lands but know I won't finish it until January. Should I hold off on it?

Loved your #1 and #4 and haven't read any of the others, so I'm going to check them out! Great list!
