Vegemite v. Marmite – It’s On!

If you follow me and some of the Aussie, Kiwi, and UK bloggers, you might have noticed that we have been debating those unique yeasty spreads, Vegemite and Marmite. Is there a difference? Oh yes there is according to my friends from Australia, the UK, and New Zealand. All three have their own version of this yeast spread and the love for them runs deep. For the rest of us in the world that prefer our yeast in bread or adult beverages, we have no idea on what we might potentially be missing out! So I decided to settle the score. As a person that has never tasted any of these spreads, I decided to do my own taste test and decide which was the tastiest!

Here are the bloggers that have declared their allegiance:

Maree (NZ) from Just Add Books
Gemzina (NZ) from Gemzina - Devourer of Books
Fiona (UK) from The Book Coop

Rachel (AUS) from And the Plot Thickens
Bella (AUS and CAN) from A Girl Reads a Book

*If I have missed you I’m sorry, but I’m posting a poll below so you can vote there and tell me what team you’re on.

I have also vlogged the experience of my first bites of Marmite and Vegemite. I have annotated it, but the popup bubbles probably won’t show up in the embedded video so if you are interested in seeing my commentary CLICK HERE.

I also completely cheated and did the vlog in English…but part of it is Australian slang English! No non-native English speakers have sent me a vlog yet, and I really want them to vlog! So, if you are a non-native English speaker and want to vlog but are afraid to, send me a video of some phrases to say in your language (YouTube has really easy annotation function too which will be super helpful to me if you do send one).

**CLICK HERE TO SEE THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AND SEE THE POPUP BUBBLES THAT INCLUDES MY COMMENTARY! I RECOMMEND THIS OVER WATCHING THE EMBEDDED VIDEO**

Also make sure you vote in the poll to declare your allegiance to Team Vegemite or Team Marmite!

…and just to show you how cool New Zealand and Australia are, here are a couple videos that I am addicted to on YouTube.

Very good scientific research, Carin. I have never tried Marmite before but now you made me go to our British shop in town and get some (I don't think they sell vegemite there, but IF they do, I'll get that, too). Will come back later and give my opinion.
Nice vlog, btw, I LOVE the hat. Even Sean was taken with it and pointed it out all the time, :) .

Rikki (my missus) gave me the link to your really funny vlog. I'm from the UK and strangely enough I understood most of the Aussie slang already. Can't say I much like either marmite or vegemite too salty and as kids we used to eat bread with lard dripping instead so I never quite understood the vegemite/marmite war as they both come in a poor second to lard dripping butties.

Great vlog!! I watched it all the way (normally I don't have the patience for more than 2 mins. of vlog-watching), so that's a big compliment.

I have never tasted Vegemite, but I did buy a jar of Marmite last time I was in England. Which is a bit silly, as you can buy it here too (the Netherlands), but it's the idea that counts.

If Vegemite is milder, then that's obviously for weaklings. Us real men (women included) go for Marmite!

I actually only ever eat it lightly spread on my bread with some cheese slices as bread filling. Cheese and Marmite is a great combination and I really like it. For those who are not keen: do you know it's chock-a-block with vitamines B? Especially good for vegetarians, like me.

You are a braver woman than I! I just couldn't put anything that resembles tar into my mouth..and the above poster talking about lard drippings made me gag as well!

I'll take your word for it that they are gone - I'm just not adventurous enough to try it out for myself. I'll stick with Nutella on my toast instead lol

Oh, but my husband did point out that I made "a face" by the time I got to the Sanitarium (NZ) marmite. I was trying really hard not to and to keep an open mind. It was WOAH salty! :D
I have never tried either marmite or vegamite, having been duly warned by both Aussies and Brits to stay back, waaay back! LOL...normally I'm not a food coward, not sure why I was re these foods. Great vlog! Loved the additional vids, too. And, I'm with Lydia....Nutella for me!

Yay! Vegemite won! I love Vegemite and have grown up on it. When I visited the UK in the '90's it wasn't sold anywhere! So, I missed eating it in the morning. But there's a new one out called 'Cheesybite' made from Cream Cheese Spread and Vegemite... you gotta keep it in the fridge; and it's very nice and smooth to put on crackers or on raw veggies as a snack.

Love this SO much! I always knew you'd be Team-Vegemite Carin. So here's a little cheer for you to use around your husband...

LET'S GO VEGEMITE
WE'RE THE BEST
SPREAD US ON TOAST, SPREAD US WITH CHEESE
WE WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A YUMMY BELLY
UNLIKE THAT MARMITE
ITS TOO SALTY
ITS TOO WEIRD
ITS VEGEMITE ALL THE WAY
LET'S GO VEGEMITE
OI! OI! OI!

Okay so its not a great cheer, but I just made it up :)

So funny! When I was 12 my family went to Australia for a year (well, my sis and I were there for 6 months, Dad, Step-mom and half-brother for a year). Luckily Dad told us this story before we got there. An Aussie friend gave him Vegemite and said he should try it. Dad said okay. He spread it on bread like we Americans would spread peanut butter (really thick!) The Aussie said nothing, suppressed much laughter until after Dad took a big bite. Dad found it just awful. Then the Aussie burst out laughing because as you point out, you should spread it really thin. My sister and I were horrified by this story (as well as by the look and odor of Vegemite) and we never tried it. To this day. Although after your vlog, if I run across it again, I might try it. But I'm not going to search it out!

I like the cap. The whole time I was thinking is it cold enough for it? Then you said it was 80 and I chuckled....

I would not be opposed to trying vegemite or marmite but the idea of spreading something that tastes like bullion cubes on my toast does not wet my whistle (sounds too salty)….but, each to their own. ;)

Hahaha! This post is way too funny. My favorite is the bit where you read the slang email--though I think a cross between Australian and Pirate would be hilarious. ;) Fun fun challenge... Plus your hat is adorable.
