Oh My Blog Award - Soundtrack of My Childhood!

Rikki from The Bookkeeper has awarded me the Oh My Blog Award! I think this award might be my favorite to date simply because of the hilarity that can ensue. She has tried to get me to do (e) Take a picture of yourself first thing in the morning, before you do anything else (hair, make up, etc) and post it after I told her I took a picture of myself without makeup and I look like Sloth from The Goonies...so yeah...don't ask because I'm not going to post it! Haha!

Here are the rules:

  1. Get really excited that you got the coolest award EVER!
  2. Choose ONE of the following options of accepting the OMB award:
  • Get really drunk and blog for 15 minutes straight, or for as long as you can focus.
  • Write about your most embarrassing moment.
  • Write a "Soundtrack of your childhood" post.
  • Make your next blog a ‘vlog’/video blog. Basically, you’re talking to the camera about whatever.
  • Take a picture of yourself first thing in the morning, before you do anything else (hair, make up, etc) and post it.
      3. Pass the award on to at least three, but preferably more, awesome bloggers. Don’t forget to tell them.

I will pass this most awesome blog award onto:

Also, make sure you visit Rikki at The Bookkeeper! She has a great blog!

Now, on to the Soundtrack of My Childhood! Click "Read More" to see my blog mixtape.

I have decided to do the "Soundtrack of your childhood" because that is simply awesome and will not be without embarrassment and hilarity (although some of that can be blamed on my parents):

BIRTH TO 5 YEARS

Barry Manilow - Mandy (1974)
This one is most definitely my mom's fault. At 4 years old or so, I remember thinking how ridiculous the album cover looked (It was the Barry Manilow - Greatest Hits Album) and it was the giant, old school cover because it was a record.

Toto - Africa (1982)
This is one of the first songs I remember liking. It's still awesome 28 years later! Don't lie...you know you groove out to it too when you hear it!

6 TO 10 YEARS OLD

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson (1982)
This was courtesy of my dad. We used to listen to Michael Jackson when we would go on trips to Colorado with him to go camping.

The Gambler - Kenny Rogers (1978)
Another camping song with my dad. We used to sing this in the car--yes, we were car singers and we were adorable! A 5 year old singing about gambling? Why yes, and we also played blackjack!

Goonies 'R' Good Enough - Cyndi Lauper (1985)
One of my favorite movies of ALL-TIME! I was going to marry Sean Astin when I grew up. Instead, he became a hobbit and I married a Texan.
(Oh, don't feel obligated to watch the whole 12 minutes, but the cast is in the Video! Hehe)

The Jets - Crush on You (1986)
This is a song I remember when we would go to the waterpark, The Beach, in Albuquerque. We'd lay in our inner tubes and they would play this over the sound system.

11 TO 15 YEARS OLD

Bust A Move - Young MC (1989)
I still listen to this. Pure awesomeness. Might just have to karaoke this song next time I go to do Korean style karaoke with friends.

I Remember You - Skid Row (1989)
I do in fact remember yesterday, listening to Skid Row's awesomeness. Thus began my rebellious preteen phase. So, what about it?!!! Hehehe!
(I may also have to Korean style this song since the video looks like it's from Korean karaoke)

More Than Words - Extreme (1990)
Timeless. Still a great song. I think this was one of the songs that made my brother pick up the guitar. *sigh* Where is my lighter?

Stranger Than Paradise - Sleeze Beez (1990)
One hit wonder for me. I know none of their other stuff. I just looked this up and they are a Dutch band. So here is some hair band awesomeness for my Dutch blogging friends!
(Yes, I got stuck in 1990. I never understood the grunge movement. Eddie Vetter and Kurt Cobain both looked depressed and dirty to me...take a bath!)

16 TO 20 YEARS

Ridiculous Thoughts - The Cranberries (1995)
Loved The Cranberries...one of the few bands that I bought albums of in these years.
These were the lean years for music as far as I'm concerned. Too many angsty grunge bands that just drove me nuts. What happened to fun music (and no Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock...I DO NOT MEAN YOU)?

Stand Up Kick Love Into Motion - Def Leppard (1992)
How could I not throw Def Leppard in somewhere. This was one of the songs I listened to over and over again when I first got my driver's license in 1993 (when I was 15).

Ants Marching - Dave Matthews Band (1995)
How could the 90s be complete without some DMB? Dave Matthews dances about how I dance....looking like I'm having a seizure or something. I lie. Actually I tried to dance like Dave Matthews. I have no rhythm. He at least jumps around with style.

Down - 311 (1995)
When I worked at a restaurant in downtown Santa Fe, we used to groove to 311 while doing our closing duties. The cleaning always went faster when we cranked them up!

Cold Beverage - G. Love & Special Sauce (1999)
Can't leave this song out. This is the only song by them I like, but I still like to "go go work the cold one"

Here's Where the Story Ends - The Sundays (1990)
A fitting end to a really fun blog post. Thanks Rikki for giving me this award. This was a super fun post to write!
(This song comes from the summer before my senior year of high school when I did a summer program at UCSD. One of the counselors, Hector, made a mixtape for me and this was on it! He was awesome. Not that he'll see this, but, "¡No Uvas!" Hector! I totally get it now!)

Ah, we seem to be of the more or less same generation. OMG, Mandy! I love Mandy, I'm embarrassed to admit. And I could watch the boys from Extreme forever. Awesome song and good looks, too.
Unfortunately I can't watch the videos you posted, they all are not available in my country, courtesy of Sony, haha. Happens often.
Anyway, a really fun post.
I've got to go and check out the blogs you awarded.

Oh, forgot. I still think you should have posted a photo. Sloth from the Goonies, lol. You are simply fishing for compliments here....:-)

Love it! What a great way to describe your childhood. I don't really watch/listen to videos on blog posts because they always last longer than I want (plus I'd probably have the same problem as Rikki).

But the idea is great. I think my post would be just Saturday Night Fever and a little Bob Dylan, so I may do the just-out-of-bed picture. I tend to have the curtains closed when I get out of bed, so.... wahahaha!

@Rikki - I like that you own your Barry Manilow love! LOL! I don't really like him. I think I remember whining for my mom to take it off the record player as a kid. I get his appeal, but I was never into him. I had to put it in there because I truly think it was the first song I actually remember hearing.

That is so sad you can't see the videos! Curse distribution rights! I love all my blogging friends from other countries, but I hate that we are separated by such silly things like distribution rights!

@leeswammes - I had WAY TOO MUCH fun writing up this post. I like The Bee Gees...nothing wrong with a little disco! I also like K.C. and the Sunshine Band (who doesn't like to shake, shake, shake...shake their booty?)

Wait a minute! I didn't say I love Barry Manilow, I only owned up to loving "Mandy", lol. Don't make it worse than it is already.
Those distribution rights suck. It's the same with live streams. They often aren't available outside the US or Canada.

@Rikki - Don't lie! I know you run around the kitchen singing Copa Cabana into a spatula. :P

About the distribution rights. I had that problem with the Winter Olympics. I heard Canadian television was way better than American coverage (because our coverage is poop) so I tried to watch their live feeds online and couldn't. So sad.

I know. I often watch NHL games and would like to watch the CBC streams and just can't (not directly from CBC anyway).

Oh, yeah, now that you mention it, I do like Copacabana, too, lol.

I will openly admit to being a fanilow! And Kenny...the gambler is just the most awesomest ever.
Thank you so very much for the award. Not sure I can compete with your soundtrack.

@Kristin - You can always do one of the other things too if you don't want to do a soundtrack. I just loved the soundtrack idea. If you do it, I can't wait to see it. I'd be excited to see you in your morning hair picture or the embarrassing moment too. All are hilarious! I mentioned your blog to my sister-in-law and hopefully she is following you at least on Facebook. I thought she'd appreciate your blog because she is into healthy eating as well!
