2010 In Review

2010 is nearly over and can I just say that I’m really looking forward to 2011?!! It was kind of a crazy and rough year for me and I even had to take a break from blogging toward the end of this year. I decided that despite my challenges, life must go on and I miss my blogging friends too much to just give up blogging altogether.

I had hoped to do much better with reading in 2010 than I actually ended up doing. I managed to read or partially read 53 books (not all of which I reviewed and listed—some of them were smutty free books from Amazon that to be honest, weren’t worth reviewing. Yes, I’m admitting it. I read a few smutty romance novels to try to expand my horizons). My spreadsheet total says I read 21,000+ pages and averaged 465 pages per book I read. I am not sure that count is completely accurate because some of the books I haven’t finished yet.

What I learned about myself
I did learn that overdoing challenges really bogged me down in 2010. I didn’t enjoy reading as much because I felt obligated to hold to the challenges I had joined. So, toward the end of the year I gave up and just read what I felt like reading. It worked much better for me and I felt much more satisfied.

I did REALLY enjoy doing read-a-longs though. I finally trudged through Middlemarch with Lydia from The Literary Lollipop and Ellie, a friend from Shelfari. It made the experience enjoyable and we are all reading The Count of Monte Cristo together right now and through the first part of 2011. Instead of joining tons of challenges, I am going to concentrate more on joining read-a-longs from now on because I feel like I get more out of them.

I will however be doing two challenges in 2011:

Rikki from The Bookkeeper’s Steampunk Challenge
I have already started this one and plan to read a total of five books for the challenge.

Zee from Reading in the North’s Nordic Challenge
I am planning on reading at least one book from each Nordic country in this challenge. I have already chosen a book for Sweden called The Saga of Gosta Berling by Selma Lagerlöf. I still have to choose books for Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. I can’t wait to start this one because I have a love affair with Scandinavia (and now Iceland too after reading The Tricking of Freya).

So I guess to make it official, I am going to make every effort to start blogging again. I miss all of my blogging friends too much to stay away. You guys have all been so supportive of me through my blogging break. I especially want to thank Amy from Amy Reads, Rachel from And the Plot Thickens, Rikki from The Bookkeeper, and Sarah from Bookworm Blues for being my sounding boards. All my blogging friends are great, but these ladies have really listened to me through some chats and are probably sick and tired of me moaning and groaning about life! I love all of my blogging friends though. You are all very special to me! Thank you all for being there in my time of need.

I am not sure that I’ll be posting three or more times a week, but my goal is to post one to two times a week and get my rear in gear for 2011. I am going to read where my heart takes me this year and not limit myself in any way other than these two challenges. I also may host a read-a-long of The Three Musketeers later this year when things settle down in life.

  • What are your plans for 2011?
  • Are you going to challenge yourself in any way this upcoming year, reading or otherwise?
  • What things will you change in your blog and/or reading habits from 2010 for the upcoming year?

Have a Happy New Year everyone!
Hope it’s a joyful year for all of us!

Carin,

It's wonderful to see you back on here - and I hope that your 2012 kicks butt and takes names. You deserve it. :)

I'm always here if you need (yet another) sounding board. I sure hope I have helped a little bit over the past few months. Continue to take care of yourself my friend, and have a lovely New Year's Eve tomorrow!

OMG, I said I hope your 2012 kicks butt and takes names...I meant 2011. Methinks it's time to get off the computer now. :)

My plans for 2011? Have a better year. :) Read more, blog more...and unplug more. In that order. :) I am going to actively work to make time for my blog and reading for pleasure.

I found the read-alongs in 2010 far more fun than I expected too, they were a great way of getting some hard classics under my belt.

Happy New Year Carin ! Hope you have a great year ahead in terms of reading and everything else :)
I am participating in a lot of challenges next year but I am not taking them too seriously. I will still continue to read what I want to. Also, I want to stop taking blogging so seriously - It's ok not to post something everyday.

Amy is a great sounding board, isn't she? Ugh, that sounds all wrong, but she is a great friend :)

And I am glad you will be blogging regularly again, or will try to. I've been having some issues keeping up, but like you, I miss my blogging friends.

I hope 2011 will be a much better year for you!

The book blogging challenges are just insane! :) I've just started book blogging 3 months back and I've only managed to join one challenge. The [time] pressure is just too much to handle, especially when you have a regular job. Haha. Though challenges are fun, it kinda defeats the purpose of having to completely enjoy the reading and the blogging experience all together because of certain constraints. Anyway, I'll be looking forward to your posts this 2011. Just enjoy doing whatever it is you wanna do and don't ever let pressure get the better of you. Have a blessed 2011! :)

I miss you too Carin :)
I am also doing a similar post like this, but won't be published till 2 hours from now, I have set it to publish at exatly 00.01 my time :)

I know challenges will disturb my reading flow that's why I only join the ones I know I will enjoy. I don't want to be burdened by Challenges.

You read more than me, I only read 32 books in 2010.

Happy New Year , Carin - I hope 2011 will be a bright and and happy one for you.
I've learnt the same lesson with challenges and also discovered I far prefer readalongs.
I read The Tricking of Freya over Christmas - a beautiful story that has inspired an interest to know more about Iceland.

Awww thank you. I love you too and would be, well, probably huddled in a corner in a mental ward without your lovely chats keeping me sane!! I'm so happy that you are staying around, I would certainly miss your blog if you stopped! And I'm with you on challenges, they just make me feel obligated and take a lot of the fun from reading. Here's to a fantastic 2011 for all of us!

My 2011 goal; balance! Reading, knitting, blogging, and RALs, KALs, and Challenges all have a place in my life, but my goal is a better balance of these things with my so-called "real" life. I'm stepping back from the Shelfari Groups this year as part of that effort. I have planned to read more 'meaty' books this (new) year than last and to read six new-to-me Classics, just because! May your New Year be all you hope for.

I'm glad you have decided to stick around :) I would miss you if you didn't, even if I haven't been around much lately myself. And I totally hear you on the being bogged down by challenges, that's why I tried to make the Nordic challenge as broad and easy to complete as possible :) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Lagerlöf!

I miss you! I have been dealing with some crazy stuff here to, so hugs.

I am such a moody reader that I think that challenges would send me to an early grave. Still, I have read a few steampunks this year and LOVED them so I will go check out that challenge.

I have been slowly reading my way through the books listed in "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die". That is challenge enough!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Carin! Yes, challenges are fun but can be overwhelming. I got a bit tired of them towards the end of the year and quit all. This year my challenge is to say no to challenges :)

Have a wonderful year ahead and glad to see you are back in blogland!

Balance in 2011 is key. I've only joined two Challenges because i have trouble reading under any kind of pressure. I'm doing the Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge and the Victorian Literature Reading Challenge - about all I can handle.

Carin, I'm glad you didn't give up on your blog. Welcome back. :)

I’ve been trying to comment on your blog for 2 days but have been really busy at work trying to close out last year so we can start working on this year (I was in Tahoe before that). Happy New Year! I am with you on the Read-a-longs, they’re great and I hope to keep them up with you this year, I am definitely interested if you start The Three Musketeers. They take up just enough time so that you can read other books as well. I am now challenging myself to read a few meatier books for the beginning of this year--- my quest for the good fluff is over --- well, at least for a little while. :)

Here’s to hoping for a good 2011(at least better)!

I really love readalongs, too! I think I get so much more from a book (especially a very MEATY book) when I read it with someone rather than on my own. I did many buddy reads this year and enjoyed all of them. Didn't do nearly as well with completing my challenges ;-)

Hi Carin. Glad you're back! I totally sympathise with not having the time to do everything you want to do. I'm aiming to post roughly twice a week but will try not to guilt myself if I can't manage that sometimes. I'm expecting this to be a busy year and I'm no superwoman! I'm also very much behind reading where your heart takes you. Reading shouldn't ever be a chore, in my opinion.
